Biography - Frank Gerhardt

Born 1967 in Hünfelden/Kirberg, Frank Gerhardt studied composition with Hans Zender and Claus Kühnl at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, as well as piano and harpsichord at the Hoch Conservatory, Frankfurt. He has been teaching electroacoustic composition and musical analysis at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts since 2000, and has been the director of the department of composition/theory at the Academy of Music "Louis Spohr", Kassel since 2009. His oeuvre includes works for all instrumental and vocal types, electroacoustic music and pieces for dance and theatre and is regularly performed and documented in radio broadcasts as well as cd-recordings. Gerhardt has received commissions for Ensemble Modern, SWR Symphony Orchestra, "Junge Deutsche Philharmonie", KNM Berlin and many other Ensembles and Festivals. He has been distinguished with numerous prizes (e.g: Hessian Composition Prize 1998, European Composition Prize for Sacred Music, Schwäbisch-Gmünd 2005) and Scholarships (e.g. Berlin Academy of Arts, "Villa Concordia" Bamberg, "Deutsches Studienzentrum" Venice).
